Living Technologies

Series 5: Living Technologies

The Living Universe metaphysics informs a different understanding of what technology should be and what function should fulfill. Actually, human technologies are not so different than life’s technologies. An antelope develops specific muscles and bones to run better, humans develop machines. A bird develops wings and specific systems of orientation, humans develop airplanes. Any human technology is a form of our adaptation. Because adaptation is not neutral, but is always pointing toward a direction, toward a purpose, our current technologies are also expressions of the purpose we have chosen.

It seems that our current technologies serve mainly one purpose: to give their beneficiaries power or precedence over others. The main point of this series of seminars is that, if we want to build a human society harmoniously integrated into the planetary ecosystem, our technologies should be aligned with nature – should be life-enhancing and not life-exhausting.

We already started to understand how Life works and create technologies that mimics Nature in their functioning: (see Biomimicry). Now, we can design technologies that work aligned with Life principles, that are able to regenerate their ecosystem and interconnect people in fair ways. This is the way and the purpose a technology should work.

Very interesting, the living technologies are not only conducive to environmental regeneration but to social fairness too. That is why the ruling castes are so eager for AI technology but not for sustainable agriculture or sustainable ocean farming. Living technologies are conducive to healthy human relations. They are conducive to localization, self-sustenance and self-governance. Thus, the ruling castes are reluctant to them.

Even though the old metaphysics still informs separation and exploitation (thus we are designing and selecting technologies that foster separation and exploitation), the new metaphysics of the Living Universe started to inform us differently. Butterfly Communities is all about employing living technologies that foster localization, autonomy, self-sustenance and self-governance, healthy human relations and the regeneration of the planetary ecosystem.

In this series of seminars we will speak about biomimicry and different technologies that mimics Life processes. We will speak about regenerative design principles and “living buildings”, seeing the human built environment not as a static thing but rather as a living process, harmoniously integrated in its ecosystem, fulfilling a role in its ecosystem. We will speak about bio-mimetic agriculture – from see-farms to indoor farms – and “circle economy” that mimics the Great Circle of Life, that is design to produce while is recycling the elements.

We will see how Butterfly Communities could be hosted by floating structures, bringing forth the first floating cities. There is a perfect opportunity to build from scratch a regenerative human built environment. Such a structure – with its indoor and outside see-farms, with its energy plant and water desalinization or rain-water collection etc – could be designed as an extended organism for the human community. A spaceship architecture where all the resources are recycled. Yes, such structures could become themselves small Circles of Life, being able to recycle the elements of life, helped by solar and wind energy.

If you want to know more about how living technologies are conducive to social and ecological regeneration, just engage this series of seminars. I said “engage” because it will be as inter-active as possible for a seminar. I would like that each seminar and each series of seminars to be engaged as a journey of discovery. Everyone of them was thought of as a puzzle of a map. Connecting these puzzle pieces in your own way, you can craft your own map that could help you better orient in our changing world.

Each seminar will have 2 parts. In first part we will talk – around only 25 minutes – about 4 or 5 ideas. I do not want to make it complicated. I will make it so you to have time to take some notes. The second part – around two hours – each of you could come with its question and I will answer. Hence, the discussion will be always oriented to your interest. Anyway, I will be glad a third part to follow – free discussion between audience triggered by the presentation. I will happily join this dialogue, ready to listen to your points of view and to improve mine.

Seminar 5.1: Living technologies – Biomimicry

We will see how the metaphysics of the Living Universe informs a whole new social and political, economic and technological paradigm:

1. Why do we need life-enhancing technologies?

2. How “living technologies” foster social fairness and healthy human relationship?

3. How “living technologies” are connected Life and so with holarchic social organization?

4. What is Biomimicry?

5. Living technologies: working for human AND for Nature

Seminar 5.2: Living Buildings

Each human built-environment could become a kind of extended organism for humans communities. Why not this human built environment to be harmoniously integrated in its environment and to fulfill an ecological role there? It is very possible! it depends only on our intention and designing principles: what kind of human world do we want to build?

1. Building as processes

2. Buildings integrated ecologically in their environment, fulfilling a role in their environment

3. Regenerative design principles

4. Spaceship Architecture

Seminar 5.3: Working with Nature

We know all that permaculture is a beautiful concept. But can permaculture and sustainable agriculture feed us? Let us find the answer together:

1. The principles of permaculture

2. Indoor farming: creating indoor a natural ecosystem (plants, animals and bacteria)

3. Regenerative sea-farming

4. Regenerative agro-forestry

Seminar 5.4: The human built environment as extended organ

This is an important seminar of its series. I would like you to understand that we are together on this planet as a crew on a spaceship. Our true body is the Planet itself! We can not endure the solar radiation without the protection of our Planet. We can not eat rocks full of minerals: we need all the Nature to produce our bread and milk and fruits. We can not live without oxygen – and for this we need a healthy Planet. I would like to show you how The Great Circle of Life is our true home, our extended organism!

1. A little about homeostasis

2. A little about “niche construction”

3. The human-built environment as extended organism

4. Spaceship architecture – feeling the building, its farms and power plants as your extended organism

Seminar 5.5: The Blue Revolution

Have you ever heard about “Blue Revolution”? Maybe now it is the time! It is an idea whose time has come:

1. Advantages of floating structures

2. Living cities as regenerative human-built environment

3. Prototyping a whole new human society – the Butterfly Island

4. The advantages of modularity: building a holarhic human organization

5. Regenerative sea-farming

Seminar 5.6: Living Economy

Our economic structure should also align with Life structure – with the Great Circle of Life. How we can do this?

Again and again: is a matter of choice: what kind of world we want to bring forth? Life evolved only through living beings that choose to evolve. Remember that we have intentionality, intelligence, creativity and liberty of decision! So, let us learn how to use this amazing human qualities to create a world conducive to Life!

1. An economic space conducive to fairness, cooperation and ecological sustainability

2. An economy oriented toward the well-being of all the humans

3. An economy oriented toward the regeneration of the planetary ecosystem

4. A Circle Economy aligned with the Great Circle of Life

5. Cradle to cradle and other regenerative approaches

What Butterfly Communities aim to be?

They aim to be a kind of living beings!

1. A new type of living beings (again about the biological reality of super-organisms)

2. Super-organisms that fulfill a role in their social and ecological environment

What we will learn?

We are here not to exploit Life using our “disruptive technologies”, but to serve a “greater than us” Life. I hope that we together will learn more about how to live on this Beautiful Planet in a life-enhancing way!

Be a Collaborator!

Anyone can become our collaborator!

We are searching for artists, trainers, film-makers, web-designers and for everyone that is inspired by the same vision as us.

Whatever the challenges of the future, cooperators will have a clear evolutionary advantage compared to non-cooperators.

In the new VUCA world, we will have to survive and thrive in new ways, different from those that have been successful so far. As a multicellular organism is smarter and has better capacities to deal with its environment than a cell alone, as an ant-hill is smarter and has better capacities to deal with its environment than an ant alone, the cooperative groups will be smarter and better equipped to deal with future challenges than single individuals.

Educators, trainers or artists – those who aim to have a social impact, to spread an idea – have to cooperate, if they want to succeed. However, the evolution of Life has a clear direction: towards ever-increasing scales of cooperation.

Those who want to move forward must learn to cooperate in mutually enhancing ways.

The open project “Butterfly Communities” is an emerging community that is searching for young artists, trainers, filmmakers, etc. that have understood that we have to help each other to have a stronger social impact.
